Hummock Island, purchased by the ART in 2016, was grazed for decades by livestock, resulting in substantial erosion of about one third of the island. The ART aims to re-vegetate these areas and return them to their original state. In order to achieve this goal, we are dependent on your help! Tussac-planting has proven to be a very efficient means of re-vegetating coastal areas of the Falklands, with the additional benefit of tussac being able to store ca. 50 tons of carbon per hectare, which is comparable to a temperate forest.<\/p>\n

\"\"Today, a number of organisations offer carbon compensations. However, very few of these organisations provide details about where and how your money has been spent. We offer you the opportunity to support the restoration of Hummock Island and thereby compensate for your personal carbon footprint. Hummock Island has an area of 303 ha, of which roughly one third is eroded.<\/p>\n

The first major tussac planting sessions on Hummock Island took place in April 2019 and since over 170,000 tussac tillers were planted on previously eroded areas. Planting efforts, also with other native plant species, will continue each year, depending on the financial support received.<\/p>\n
